Akina Kondoh 

Since her dramatic career change from economics to music in 2015, a Japanese pianist Akina Kondoh has been growing fast as a pianist. In 2018, she won the third prize (tie) in Pittsburgh International Piano Competition and performed “Rain Tree Sketch II” by Toru Takemitsu in the winners concert at Carnegie Hall, NYC. She also received a very competitive Outstanding Merit Fellowship for Continuing Doctoral Students from West Virginia University.

Rising Star: Akina Kondoh's Journey from Economics to Piano Prodigy


Since making a bold career transition in 2015, Akina Kondoh has rapidly established herself as a remarkable pianist, captivating audiences with her profound musicality and technical prowess. 


Early Beginnings and Education

Born with a passion for music, Akina began her piano and theory lessons at the tender age of four. Her dedication and talent soon became evident, leading her to pursue formal education in the field. Akina completed a Master of Music in Piano Performance at Penn State University under the guidance of the esteemed Dr. Jose Ramon Mendez. She continued her studies, earning a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Piano Performance from West Virginia University, where she worked with renowned faculty members Dr. Ching-Wen Hsiao and Dr. Lucy Mauro.


Accolades and Achievements

Akina's talent was showcased on an international level when she garnered third prize (tie) at the Pittsburgh International Piano Competition in 2018. This prestigious recognition opened doors for her to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City, where she delivered a stunning rendition of “Rain Tree Sketch II” by the celebrated composer Toru Takemitsu. 


In addition to her performance accolades, Akina was honored with the highly competitive Outstanding Merit Fellowship for Continuing Doctoral Students from West Virginia University, a testament to her academic prowess and dedication to her craft.

An advocate for East Asian piano music, Akina is not only a performer but also a dedicated educator. As part of the faculty at the WVU Community Music Program, she shares her expertise and passion for music with the next generation of musicians.

Beyond her musical pursuits, Akina is a language enthusiast. Fluent in Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, and Indonesian, she embraces her diverse cultural background, which enriches her musical expression and outreach.


With her impressive achievements and an unwavering commitment to her artistry, Akina Kondoh is undoubtedly a rising star in the classical music scene. As she continues to perform in her hometown of Tokyo and throughout the United States, audiences can look forward to witnessing the evolution of this extraordinary musician.
